‘You Don’t Have To Say’ sees Sola in a battle between being trapped by her memories whilst simultaneously trying to move on from the past and look to the future. Sola reflects the inherent tension in the track’s themes with an experimental sonic clash between the throbbing bassline against the intricate synths and guitars - the result is a stunning track which is both taut and dreamy as you are soaked in Sola’s creative world.
The accompanying video, directed by Nicolee Tsin opens with Sola contained within a bubble - a visual representation of her being both trapped inside her past and looking ahead through the clear barrier. With cinematic colours including vivid and deep lighting across Sola performing in striking fashion pieces, the video is a daring and captivating visual for the futuristic and bold ‘You Don’t Have To Say’.
Speaking on the track, Sola said, “‘You Don’t Have To Say’ explores how to move forward from the past while also reflecting on the bittersweet feelings that memories can often provide. The juxtaposition in the bassline and synths makes you feel a little uncomfortable which is something I love to capture in my music.”
Signed to Jamz Supernova’s Future Bounce label, Sola’s artistry has real depth and her vocal delivery stands out as rich yet unconventional. Having played classical piano since the age of 6, it wasn’t until she discovered the raw and unfiltered vocals of Nina Simone several years later that she grew the confidence to accept her own voice and start singing. After a four-year stint at the prestigious New York University, Sola started producing her own music. It was a time she found herself obsessed with Portishead, Massive Attack, and Burial, loving their darker, cinematic qualities and their ability to blur genres. In 2020, she released her impressive EP project ‘Mami Wata’ which was created almost completely alone in her bedroom during lockdown. The EP showcased her multifaceted musical upbringing perfectly, creating the firm foundations for this latest run of new music which is set to broaden her musical horizons even further.

We turned on to Emma Jean at Monterey Jazz Fest, and she's the reason I went from 'ehhh I'm not sure I like Acid Jazz and I sure as hell don't like fusion" to "what the hell is *this awesome galactic brilliance?!* A rare talent and a damn fine slab of wax that I have on heavy rotation. I love many tracks including 'Spectre', and i wonder to myself how much it owes to Kate Bush's spectral "Watching You Without Me." jaxers
