The Score

from Feels Like A War by Sola

/

about

‘The Score’ began at a painful time of reflection for Sola, written on the 25th anniversary of the death of Stephen Lawrence and after Sola herself had been sexually assaulted.

Opening the track on the piano herself, Sola’s remarkable and honest lyrics have a tangible burning anger at how little has changed in society as she contemplates the fragility of life, brutality against black people and the violation of women. Instrumentalists Moses Boyd on drums, Raven Bush on strings and Ife Ogunjobi (Ezra Collective) on trumpet feature as the track progresses from its striking opening.

The track drops with a Destine Paige directed video, recorded in an atmospheric church setting with Sola performing a stunning live version of ‘The Score’. With the stripped-back performance, Sola’s anguish and pain are truly palpable and striking as she is seen tracing back the creation of the track which she wrote alone at a piano.

Speaking on the track and the video for ‘The Score’, Sola said: “Much of the lyrics to ‘The Score’ are about revenge, but also recovering from trauma, and how to live with pain. I wanted to strip the song back in an acoustic live performance. The song is incredibly personal and vulnerable, so the setting of the church helped reflect the rawness and emotion. I wrote the song alone at a piano, so the video was a chance for me to recreate this moment in a live environment.”

Signed to Jamz Supernova’s Future Bounce label, Sola’s artistry has real depth and her vocal delivery stands out as rich yet unconventional. Having played classical piano since the age of 6, it wasn’t until she discovered the raw and unfiltered vocals of Nina Simone several years later that she grew the confidence to accept her own voice and start singing. After a four-year stint at the prestigious New York University, Sola started producing her own music. It was a time she found herself obsessed with Portishead, Massive Attack, and Burial, loving their darker, cinematic qualities and their ability to blur genres. In 2020, she released her impressive EP project ‘Mami Wata’ which was created almost completely alone in her bedroom during lockdown. The EP showcased her multifaceted musical upbringing perfectly, creating the firm foundations for this latest run of new music which is set to broaden her musical horizons even further.
