An artist often has to put their soul on display for the world to hear. Sola makes sure she is heard loud and clear for all to see.
The multi-instrumentalist, producer, and singer first picked up the piano at age six and draws from a range of influences including classical music, jazz, and electronica.
Sola reinvigorates R&B into “warped soul” - a distorted and vulnerable look at what it means to be a black British woman today.
Following on from her much-lauded 2021 EP “Feels Like A War” Sola is back with new music.
“Abide In U” is about finding a safe space or person who encourages you to be vulnerable. We all often wear masks and pretend to be more put together and perfect than we actually are, despite knowing it's not healthy to always keep up appearances. The song is about admitting we can't do everything alone, and that needing help is ok sometimes. It's about finding the power within weakness, and how showing your vulnerability can be a sign of strength when we open up.
The acclaimed British musician Moses Boyd delivers the drums which sound perfect against Sola’s vulnerable lyrics and production; the end result is a moving listen.
About Sola:

She would release her debut EP, Wealth Has Come, in 2018, with the striking visuals for “Save Yourself” earning a UK MVA nomination for Best Newcomer. Sola’s sophomore project Mami Wata garnered critical acclaim, with the single “White Space” featuring in The Guardian’s writer's picks for ‘The Best Songs of 2020’.
lyrics
In warm water running deep
As your waves wash over me
Somewhere caught in the inbetween of a feeling
I was lost in a memory
It felt easier than believing
In a bittersweet song
It won’t kill me to listen
It hurts my pride
To take the pill that makes me better
There’s a fine line
That separates me from my best and worst
It hurts my pride when I abide in you
When I abide
I don’t want to be an enemy to myself
I’ve been so mean
It’s hard enough just trying to find some peace
When everyone’s speaking
I was lost in a memory
It felt easier than believing
In a bittersweet song
It won’t kill me to listen
It hurts my pride
To take the pill that makes me better
There’s a fine line
That separates me from my best and worst
It hurts my pride when I abide in you
When I abide
What if I admit that I need you here
It’s been hard for me to let you in
Just be patient with me
While I find the strength
I apologize if I’ve been a bad friend to you
Like so many others, this came like a bolt out of the blue and, even though it's well before payday, I had to have this astonishing album on vinyl to prove it exists. The feel of the tunes makes me feel like the Impressions do, Curtis Mayfield, the big spaces and instinctive horns and stuff drifting in and out. Great grooves and I can see lots of ghosts nodding along to this with big smiles on their faces. At last! Anthony Cottrell
