The new self-produced EP sees Sola collaborating with Moses Boyd, Ife Ogunjobi (Ezra Collective), Raven Bush and Tora-i on a self-reflective journey which sees her addressing deeply personal themes such as growing pains, healing and maturing as well as injustice, sexism and mental health. All of which is delivered with Sola’s unique creative spark to release a body of work which is all at once warm, reflective and boundary-pushing as she finds the space to explore classical and soulful sounds mixed with her hallmark experimental production.
Speaking on her ‘Feels Like A War’ EP, Sola said: “This EP is a self-reflective journey which was mostly written during a period where I had a chance to slow down and reflect. It’s also the first time I’ve really collaborated with other musicians on a project and it really pushed me creatively. It explores more classic and soulful sounds than my previous releases and will act as a prequel to more experimental releases from this creative period.”
Latest single ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ sees Sola drawing influence from the classic beat production and songwriting of Timbaland and Missy Elliott as she challenges and overthrows the gaze through which women’s bodies and sexuality are depicted.
Speaking on the new track, Sola said, “I wrote this song after rewatching the Stanley Kubrick film of the same name. It’s a haunting film, but also incredibly tone deaf and archaic it was in its depiction of women’s bodies and sex. The song is about cirvumveting that and using the feminnine gaze to escape unrealistic ideals of what pleasure really is.”
Signed to Jamz Supernova’s Future Bounce label, Sola’s artistry has real depth and her vocal delivery stands out as rich yet unconventional. Having played classical piano since the age of 6, it wasn’t until she discovered the raw and unfiltered vocals of Nina Simone several years later that she grew the confidence to accept her own voice and start singing. After a four-year stint at the prestigious New York University, Sola started producing her own music. It was a time she found herself obsessed with Portishead, Massive Attack, and Burial, loving their darker, cinematic qualities and their ability to blur genres. In 2020, she released her impressive EP project ‘Mami Wata’ which was created almost completely alone in her bedroom during lockdown. The EP showcased her multifaceted musical upbringing perfectly, creating the firm foundations for this latest run of new music which is set to broaden her musical horizons even further.
With ‘Feels Like A War’ out now, it is clear that Sola is in a lane of her own as she continues to push her creative boundaries with results on her latest EP.

We turned on to Emma Jean at Monterey Jazz Fest, and she's the reason I went from 'ehhh I'm not sure I like Acid Jazz and I sure as hell don't like fusion" to "what the hell is *this awesome galactic brilliance?!* A rare talent and a damn fine slab of wax that I have on heavy rotation. I love many tracks including 'Spectre', and i wonder to myself how much it owes to Kate Bush's spectral "Watching You Without Me." jaxers
